Best Invoicing App for Freelancers (2026)

Short answer

The best free invoicing apps for freelancers are Wave and Zoho Invoice, and if you would rather send invoices from where your money already sits, a free business account such as Found includes invoicing. If you want a polished paid app for iPhone and Android, FreshBooks is the most complete.

This page focuses on phone apps, free options and invoicing from your bank or payment app. For the desktop software comparison, automation and AI features, see our full invoicing software guide.

Best free invoicing apps (no monthly fee)

"Free" always means the app is free to send invoices. You still pay a processing fee when a client pays by card, so the real cost depends on how clients pay.

Only need one invoice? Our free invoice generator builds a printable invoice in your browser and saves it as a PDF. There is no account, and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Wave. The Starter plan is $0 and allows unlimited invoices and estimates, with online payments at standard rates: 2.9% + $0.60 per card payment and 3.4% + $0.60 for Amex. Pro ($19 a month) adds automatic late payment reminders and bank-transaction import. One thing to know: Wave only sends invoices automatically when online payments are switched on; without that, you share a link or PDF yourself.

Zoho Invoice. The free plan allows up to 500 invoices a year, two users and three projects, with Zoho branding on the invoice. It has iOS and Android apps. For most solo freelancers, 500 invoices a year is far more than needed.

Square Free plan. You can send invoices, estimates and contracts at $0 a month and pay only when you are paid: 3.3% + 30¢ on cards (2.9% + 30¢ on Plus and Premium) and 1% on bank transfers with a $1 minimum.

PayPal. Creating an invoice is free with a PayPal Business account. Fees apply when the client pays: 2.99% + $0.49 for a standard card, 3.49% + $0.49 if they pay through PayPal or Venmo, and 1% (capped at $10) for a bank payment. PayPal also lists a separate $14.99 monthly invoice subscription, which you do not need for basic invoices.

Invoicing from your business bank app

If you want to invoice clients without opening yet another app, some business accounts have invoicing built in. As of October 2026:

  • Found (a financial technology company, not a bank; banking services are provided by Lead Bank, Member FDIC). The $0 plan lists unlimited invoices, recurring invoices, estimates and payment requests, with apps on iOS and Android. Found Plus is $35 a month and is optional.
  • Novo (a fintech, not a bank; banking by Middlesex Federal Savings). It lists a no-fee business checking account, an invoicing feature and iOS and Android apps. It does not publish invoice fees on its home page, so check before you rely on it.
  • Lili (a fintech, not a bank; banking by Sunrise Banks). Invoicing is only on its paid Smart and Premium plans, not the no-fee Core account.
  • Mercury. Per its support pages, free accounts can create, send and track unlimited invoices, and clients can pay by ACH, wire or check at no cost. Cards run through a connected Stripe account at Stripe's normal rates. Recurring invoices and branding need a paid plan. We could not confirm its mobile invoicing, so test it on your phone first.

Wise offers a free online invoice generator with no signup. It creates and downloads the invoice; you get paid into a Wise Business account if you use one, but the generator itself does not collect payments.

We could not verify invoicing in the big traditional bank apps, so we have not listed them. Ask your own bank, or use one of the options above alongside it. Whichever you pick, make sure the account is a business account in your own name and not your personal checking.

Best invoicing apps for iPhone and Android

FreshBooks, Bonsai, Zoho Invoice, Found and PayPal all list iOS and Android apps.

FreshBooks is the most complete paid choice. Its pricing page shows Lite at $23 a month (limited to 5 billable clients), Plus at $43 (50 clients) and Premium at $70 (unlimited), with a 30-day free trial and no credit card required. It lists 2.9% + $0.30 on cards and 1% on bank transfers. It says its mobile apps sync with the desktop version and handle nearly all the same tasks. Promotional discounts appear on the page, so the price you see at checkout may be lower.

Bonsai starts invoicing on its Essentials plan at $25 a month, or $19 a month billed annually. A 7-day free trial is available. The iOS and Android apps come with every plan, and the product is built around contracts and proposals as well as invoices. For writing the contract that goes with the invoice, see how to write a freelance contract.

Wave, Zoho Invoice and Found are the picks when you want a phone app and do not want a monthly bill.

Payment request apps vs real invoices

Venmo, Cash App and PayPal all let you request money in a few taps. That is fine for a small, one-off job for someone you know. Switch to a proper invoice when:

  • The client is a business. Their accountant usually wants an invoice with a number to match against the payment.
  • You need a record for taxes. An invoice shows what the money was for, the date and who paid, which makes your bookkeeping and tax filing easier.
  • The job has terms. A due date, a late fee, a deposit or a payment schedule only works if it is written down.
  • You work with the client regularly. Numbered invoices let both of you see what is paid and what is open.

A proper invoice includes your name or business name and contact details, the client's name, a unique invoice number, the issue date and due date, itemised work with rates and totals, and how to pay. If you also run a store or booking page, see how to accept payments on a website.

Also read the terms of whichever app you use if you take business payments through a personal account. Apps can limit or treat business use differently, and the rules vary by app, so check them before you depend on it for client money.

Which invoicing app should you pick?

  • No budget, want a phone app: Wave or Zoho Invoice.
  • Want invoicing and banking in one place: Found, Novo or Mercury.
  • Clients already pay through PayPal: PayPal invoices.
  • Bill hourly and want the best paid mobile app: FreshBooks.
  • Need contracts, proposals and invoices together: Bonsai.
  • Want AI features, QuickBooks, HoneyBook or comparisons beyond phone apps: see the invoicing software guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free invoicing app for freelancers?
For most freelancers, Wave's free Starter plan, Zoho Invoice's free plan (up to 500 invoices a year) or a free business bank account with invoicing built in, such as Found, are the strongest starting points. All three cost nothing per month; you pay card processing fees only when a client pays online.
Can I send invoices from my banking app?
Some business accounts include invoicing. As of October 2026, Found (free plan), Novo and Mercury list invoicing, and Lili includes it only on its paid Smart and Premium plans. Most traditional bank apps do not, so a free account at a fintech or a PayPal Business account is usually the quickest route.
What is the best invoicing app for Android and iPhone?
FreshBooks, Bonsai, Zoho Invoice, Found and PayPal all list iOS and Android apps. FreshBooks says you can do nearly everything on mobile that you can on desktop, which makes it the most complete choice if you are willing to pay.
Is a PayPal, Venmo or Cash App request the same as an invoice?
No. A payment request is a quick way to ask for money. An invoice is a record with a number, dates, itemised work and payment terms. For small one-off jobs a request can be fine; for regular or business clients, send a proper invoice.
